Sister of Charity of Nazareth
My name is Sr Paris Slapikas and I’m a Sister of Charity of Nazareth living in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. I am the Director of Sister Visitor Center, a program of Catholic Charities of Louisville. We assist individuals and families through financial crisis and food insecurity. We strengthen our community by working in solidarity with the economically vulnerable. Our mission is to help meet the basic needs of our neighbors with electric, water and rent assistance, access to our supermarket style choice pantry, providing essential items for babies and supplies to those who are unhoused and resources, referrals, SNAP assistance and wrap around case management services to help individuals thrive and reach self-sufficiency.
I am very excited to have the opportunity to travel to Rome for HOPE 2025. In a world that is rapidly changing, the need for me to be with younger religious sisters and discuss where we experience hope for the future of religious life has never been more important. When we come together, we create a space for shared learning, mutual support, and the exchange of ideas that transcend cultural and geographical boundaries. Amidst the uncertainties and challenges facing the world today, there is a growing sense of renewal among younger religious sisters who are committed to living their vocation with passion, hope, creativity, and a deep sense of purpose. Cross cultural gatherings like this allow me to reflect on my own journey and envision a collective future where religious life is dynamic and relevant.
One of the most hopeful aspects of the future of religious life is the emerging diversity and global interconnectedness within and among communities. Religious life is no longer confined to specific regions or cultures; it is increasingly being shaped by women from diverse backgrounds and experiences. This inclusivity enriches the spiritual tapestry of religious orders, broadening perspectives, and fosters a deeper understanding of universal values like compassion, justice, and peace.
We are increasingly aware that religious life is being reimagined, and we can no longer cling to outdated models to meet the needs of the world today. While staying rooted in timeless ideals and charisms, we continue to show up with a deep trust in God’s promise, enduring faith and a commitment to answer the call to serve, to pray and to live in solidarity with those in need. HOPE 2025 is a beautiful reflection and just a small sample size of the many women who have dedicated their lives to caring for others and serving the marginalized all around the world.
